The History of Slemon Park originates back to 1940, with the decision to open a base in Prince Edward Island to support the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. The base was named R.C.A.F. Station Summerside and in 1941 became a permanent installation and home to the Air Navigational School, a training facility for NATO navigators.
In 1948, Air Navigation School #2 under the British Commonwealth NATO training command relocated to Summerside and with the increase in base activity, came the need for more housing units. In 1949, houses, school and roads were built and the new housing area was named Slemon Park in honor of Air Marshall Roy Slemon. The name Slemon Park is still used today.
In April 1960, the base acquired more land and the Maritime Reconnaissance Operational Training Unit was relocated to Summerside flying Argus Maritime Patrol Aircraft. On February 1, 1968 RCAF Station Summerside was renamed Canadian Forces Base Summerside. At that time, 413 Search and Rescue Squadron was relocated to Canadian Forces Base Summerside and became the home of SAR activities for the East Coast of Canada.
In 1991, the base closure was announced by the Canadian Government and 413 Squadron was relocated to Canadian Forces Base Greenwood, Nova Scotia.
The Slemon Park Corporation evolved in 1991 as a private company dedicated to creating location solutions for regional, national and international business. The corporation's mandate is to enhance economic development in Prince County and Prince Edward Island. The Corporation inherited 1500 acres of property and other assets from the former CFB Base Summerside, which closed in 1989. An effective collaboration between local, provincial and federal governments allowed the creation of Slemon Park Corporation.
